During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
