Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
