'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Ethan Galbraith resumes clash with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he remembers the thrilling final moments of his team's epic comeback victory against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. That match culminated with Galbraith temporarily wearing a fan's glasses following the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a powerful shot from outside the box, and his teammate promptly hammered in the deflection before sprinting toward the home end to mark the goal, with the crowd swarming the players.

Stunning Reversal

The result sealed an incredible comeback given the Welsh side had been behind 2-0 midway through the second half. During the delirium, there was some minor mishaps. The midfielder recalled, "There was a spectator trying to get our attention and myself and Keysy [Josh Key] were thinking: 'What's he on about here?' Then we saw the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as athletes but we're humans, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

The result earned a next round fixture at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a team Galbraith pushed hard at the same stage of the FA Cup with his former club in February. The athletic midfielder had arguably the best view when Orient took the lead in spectacular fashion, with a teammate's long-range effort from about way out going in via the crossbar and the City goalkeeper. It seems unfair that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've given it to him for having a go from that distance," stated Galbraith, who started in midfield before switching to right defensive wing after Orient changed shape. That meant getting to grips with the England international, with whom he exchanged jerseys, and the attacker was among the opposition who paid tribute to the way his former team played positively.

City's Quality

"Fitness-wise they are exceptional but even the basics and routine actions, they can just execute repeatedly," Galbraith says. "It seems as if they complete every delivery and they understand how to manage and take the sting out of a game. You can think you're doing well and then abruptly they will just thread a ball through a line without you even spotting it. You have to be alert at all times of the game. It takes a tough attitude and concentration just to keep pace."

Welsh Transition

The Welsh side pushed to sign Galbraith in January and fought off rivals to bring him in in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He established himself as a crowd pleaser across multiple campaigns at Orient and has swiftly achieved similar status in south Wales. At his previous team he reunited with Richie Wellens, who earlier gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in senior football on loan at his loan club from United. Then came a spell at League Two the Manchester club, before he moved on from Old Trafford.

Learning Curve

"I was probably a slightly green going into professional soccer. I think a lot of players would say development squad matches is entirely separate. Sometimes it feels like the ball is moved without real physicality. There's not many tackles or duels. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adapt rapidly."

Country Call-ups

His progress reflects that maturation for his team and nation, excelling for the Green and White Army, who could still reach the global tournament next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has started the recent fixtures, including both legs encounters against Germany. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's ex- international manager, paid him the ultimate compliment, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he manipulates the ball and his eye for a decisive through ball.

Early Days

This represents an incredible journey for the kid from the local area in the Belfast suburb, just outside the capital, who was raised observing his parent, Stuart, also a central player, play for his father's team.

Manchester United Experience

His only game for United came in Central Asia in 2019, a Europa League trip to the Kazakh capital, where they featured on an synthetic surface and the venue ceiling was sealed owing to the weather of bitter cold. "This represented a long trip and it was chilly," he comments, smiling. "The week before, the academy prospects trained together, so that aided our adjustment. Just to accompany the senior squad and make an appearance at the end was unbelievable."

Departing Old Trafford

What was the challenge was it to depart Manchester United, the club he signed from his boyhood team aged a teenager? "This turned out relatively straightforward, because I arrived at the moment where I understood I wouldn't break through at first-team level. I'm hugely grateful for the years at the club but it got to the point where I felt I required a fresh start, drop down the leagues and play professional soccer. Now I'm gradually working my way back up."

New Environment

It is mid-afternoon at the club's training ground but Galbraith has an appointment at 5pm: a learner's exam, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Before his recent move to the local area, the mid-twenties player was a constant rider in Swansea's nicknamed team minibus, a team vehicle driven by academy staff, Pete and Howard, which transports players to and from practice and games.

"It's myself a teammate, another squad member, an Ivorian player – the Swedish defender used to be in it but has got his license. It's pleasant to interact with the lads but I'm hoping to be the next one out of the minibus and behind the wheel. Franco enjoys practical jokes; he's frequently playing tricks."

Fan Interactions

During his time at his former club, Galbraith would blend in with followers on the Tube after beginning his trip at Brentwood. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
